VIDEO: On Civics & News Media: Higher Ed Leaders [2:11]

Three NJ academic leaders draw connections between the quality and depth of our "news," and our success as a democracy. "Many people are frustrated 'cause they don't know where to get involved... to find out how they can be good citizens," says Michael Zavada, Dean of Arts & Sciences at Seton Hall University. Nancy Cantor, Chancellor of Rutgers University - Newark, suggests that "the news media defines democracy" in America, and that understanding how to "empower different voices" is a critical issue.

This 2-minute compilation also includes comments from Peter Mercer, President of Ramapo College, and focuses on the news media's role in shaping American democracy and its potential for fostering constructive civic dialogue. Audio clips are from WORDS MATTER, a 5-part series of interviews with NJ leaders in higher education exploring the relationship of words and leadership.
