CivicStory Editor Co-Director (PT)
CivicStory is a nonprofit news site with a mission to advance solutions-based news about ecology, civics, and restorative action in Central to Northern New Jersey. We aim to enlarge a civics space for news that empowers citizens and fosters thriving communities.
Position Overview:
The part-time Editor Co-Director raises the profile of CivicStory through excellent writing and speaking, and editorial, digital, and audience development skills. The ECD writes an explainer every two weeks, consults regularly with editorial advisors and the Development Co-Director, is self-motivated, organized and civic-spirited, and enjoys analyzing words and meanings in our diverse society.
Core Responsibilities:
Create brief bimonthly news updates that highlight eco-stewardship, civics learning, and creative change in the Central to Northeast Jersey regions
Update and curate content on CivicStory.org, SRhub.org, and/or YouTube weekly
Write an explainer or brief every two weeks (600-1000 words); hire freelance writers as needed
Supervise our Scripps-Howard Fund Fall Intern, meeting twice weekly
Schedule and facilitate weekly editorial advisory meetings (45 minutes)
Qualifications:
Passion for empowering citizens of all backgrounds
Excellent writing, speaking and analytical skills; strong organization and detail management
Three+ years’ in professional reporting, editing, and/or leading nonprofit news teams
Technical proficiency across multiple digital platforms including video and audio editing; Squarespace and WordPress; Google analytics; graphic design (Canva or other)
Social media skills; knowledge of DCM systems
Start Date: Aug. 25, 2026
90% remote; residence in Northeast New Jersey (Essex or Union County a plus); $2,600/mo; 15 hrs/week; flexible schedule; available during two weekdays/wk and some evenings.
Reports to the board at monthly meetings.
