CivicStory Seeks Development & Growth Co-Director

CivicStory is a nonprofit news site focused on civics, ecology, and creative change in New Jersey and beyond. Our mission is two-pronged: to advance solutions-based news about restoring ecosystems and strengthening our democracy, and to amplify the role of news in empowering ordinary citizens. The Development & Growth Co-director will build on CivicStory’s core values and provide executive co-leadership that enables the organization to broaden its reach and impact.

Position Overview:

The Development & Growth Co-director is a collaborative leader with superior communications, technical, fundraising and administrative skill to guide and manage CivicStory’s operational growth. Consulting regularly with the Senior Editor/Co-Director, the DGC works closely with the Board to set the organization’s annual budget and strategy and engage individual donors, foundations, and sponsors in broadening the civics space in news. Enhancing our core NJ ecology-civics fellowship program (www.SRHub.org,) the DGC is committed to shared decision-making and supervises a part-time team of three.

The DGC is the organization’s administrative leader and co-executive, consulting daily with staff and reporting directly to the board. The successful candidate is an enthusiastic critical thinker who loves building relationships and partnerships. This role is part-time and flexible, estimated 18 to 20 hours per week over 3 or 4 weekdays, working remotely but available to meet in person.

Key Responsibilities:

● Strategically assess CivicStory’s needs, opportunities, resources and relationships, consulting with board and staff

● Solicit gifts from major donors, small donors, corporations and foundations; track responses, and report at monthly board meetings on progress

● Work with the Senior Editor/Co-Director — who directs the selection of stories, and edits and distributes them in a timely manner — on overall audience growth strategy

● Set annual schedule of forums, fellowships, meetings and events with the Senior Editor and board; coordinate a part-time staff team of 3 or 4

● Create an annual budget for CivicStory and set achievable goals, consulting with the Senior Editor/Co-director and the finance team on strategic priorities; work with the Board Treasurer to adjust spending if needed

● Oversee other financial, personnel, legal or editorial needs with the Bookkeeper/Finance administrator as needed

Compensation: $3600/month, ext. 18-20 hrs/wk. Role may expand as funds become available'

Qualifications:

● 3+ years of nonprofit operations or business leadership and a track-record of effective fund-raising, donor cultivation and communications

● Excellent writing, analytical skills and attention to detail

● Budget management and preparation, analysis and reporting

● Technical proficiency across digital platforms and social media

● Passion for nonprofit news, empowering citizens, and engaging diverse communities

● Masters degree or MBA preferred; experience in diverse cultures and languages

Availability: October 6, 2025

● Flexible schedule; residence in and familiarity with New Jersey preferred

● Some evenings and occasional weekend events; attendance at professional conferences

(e.g. INN, Lenfest, Center for Cooperative Media, New Jersey nonprofits)

● Report to the Board; attend monthly board meetings and committee meetings and

facilitate staff meetings
